Two great mountain railways, a hike close to the glacier and slow coffee on a car-free street, beneath the Matterhorn in four days.
Zermatt is entirely car-free, so drivers park in Täsch and finish the last stretch on the frequent shuttle train, while everyone else simply rides the main line straight in.

Buying sandwiches and snacks in the village before heading up saves considerably over the mountain-top restaurant prices at Gornergrat or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
Given how expensive standalone dinners run in Zermatt, a half-board hotel package often works out cheaper than paying for restaurant meals each night.
The Rothorn cable car on the opposite side of the valley gives a nearly as impressive Matterhorn panorama with a fraction of the Gornergrat crowds.
The Fünf-Seenweg links five small alpine lakes, several of which mirror the Matterhorn on a calm morning, without needing any lift ticket beyond the first one up.
The smaller Sunnegga funicular gets moving early and offers a quiet, near-empty viewpoint before the bigger Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lines fill up.
