Arrival at Nuremberg Airport & into the old town

Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is about 5 km from the centre, and the U2 underground runs straight to the Hauptbahnhof (main station) in about 13 minutes, roughly every 10 minutes from about 4:30 to 00:30. The airport sits in price level A, so the fare is the same as a ride inside the city: in 2026 a single ticket is €3.90 at the machine or €3.65 online. The machines are just outside baggage claim and at the top of the underground stairs. The old town begins at the Königstor gate beside the station, and a taxi to the centre is quoted by the tourist office at about €28 and 15 minutes in normal traffic. Fares change each January, so check current prices in the VGN app.

The Schöner Brunnen, a Gothic fountain on the Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg

The Hauptmarkt & the Frauenkirche

Walk from the station up Königstraße past St. Lorenz and across the Pegnitz to the Hauptmarkt, the old town's main square. The Frauenkirche closes its east side: a Gothic church built between 1352 and 1362 under Emperor Charles IV, on the site of the synagogue destroyed in the 1349 pogrom, which is worth knowing before you step inside. Its clock figures, the Männleinlaufen, parade daily at noon, so if you land early, aim to be on the square at 12:00. The Schöner Brunnen fountain stands on the same square, with a view toward the Gothic church of St. Sebald. Church opening hours vary around services, so check current times.

🚶 ~15 min on foot from the Hauptbahnhof along Königstraße 💵 Free to walk the square (check church entry) 🕐 Aim for noon to see the Männleinlaufen, allow 1-2 hours

Christkindlesmarkt stalls decorated with garlands at dusk on the Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg

Christkindlesmarkt: Rostbratwurst, Lebkuchen & Feuerzangenbowle

The Christkindlesmarkt fills the Hauptmarkt with up to 180 stalls under red-and-white cloth roofs, and its first written mention dates from 1678. The 2026 market runs from 27 November to 24 December, daily 10:00 to 21:00 (24 December until 14:00). On the opening Friday the Christkind speaks the Prolog from the Frauenkirche gallery at 17:30 and the market stays open to 22:00, so check current ceremony details and arrive early if you want to be there. Order Drei im Weggla (three small Rostbratwürste in a roll), Glühwein, or Feuerzangenbowle, a red wine and rum punch, and buy a Zwetschgenmännle, a figure made of dried plums. In 2025, Drei im Weggla cost about €4.50-5 and Glühwein about €4.50 a cup with a €5 mug deposit.

Nuremberg Rostbratwürste grilled and served on a plate

Red beer, rock-cut cellars & a Franconian dinner

A maze of rock-cut cellars runs under the old town, once used to store beer. The Historische Felsengänge runs guided tours, including a Red Beer tour (listed Monday to Sunday), a tour in English and a rock-corridors tour, and takes bookings online, so check tour times and prices on its site. For dinner, Zum Gulden Stern (Zirkelschmiedsgasse 26) describes itself as the oldest bratwurst tavern in Nuremberg that has stayed in one place. It grills sausages over a beech wood fire, lists mains from €9.50, and is open daily 11:00 to 22:00 with the kitchen closing at 21:30. Many Franconian menus also offer Schäufele (roast pork shoulder). Reserve ahead in market season.

Rows of Lebkuchen gingerbread on display at a stall in the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt

Back at the market: Sister Cities & Kinderweihnacht

Spend the evening on the parts of the market you skipped on Day 1. The Markt der Partnerstädte on the Rathausplatz beside the main market runs 27 November to 23 December in 2026, with crafts and specialties from countries such as Nicaragua, China, Scotland and Ukraine. The Kinderweihnacht on Hans-Sachs-Platz (27 November to 30 December in 2026) has a carousel, a steam train and a children's programme. Buy Lebkuchen to take home: the name Nürnberger Lebkuchen is origin-protected, so look for it on the label. Hours at the side markets can differ from the main market, so check current times.

🚶 Both are in the old town centre, a short walk from the Hauptmarkt 💵 Free entry, rides, food and drinks extra 🕐 Early evening, the main market closes at 21:00

Bamberg Cathedral with its four towers on the Domberg

Train to Bamberg & the Cathedral Hill

Bamberg's old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, and it is an easy day trip from Nuremberg: DB lists the fastest ICE at about 34 minutes and regional trains at about 41 minutes, with frequent departures, so check the DB Navigator app for times. Climb to the cathedral on the Domberg, home of the Bamberger Reiter horseman statue. In market season Bamberg's own Christmas market is listed for 24 November to 23 December 2026 around Maximiliansplatz and the Grüner Markt, so check current dates. Skip the day trip if your flight leaves early.

🚆 ~34 min by ICE, ~41 min by regional train from Nürnberg Hbf 💵 Bayern-Ticket from €34 (regional trains, check current), compare a point-to-point fare 🕐 After 9:00 on weekdays with a Bayern-Ticket, allow 1.5 hours on the cathedral hill
Afternoon
A glass of Rauchbier smoked beer in Bamberg

Rauchbier at Schlenkerla & the Old Town Hall

Bamberg is known for Rauchbier, a beer with a smoky flavour. Brauerei Schlenkerla (Dominikanerstraße 6) is open daily 9:30 to 23:30 with food from 11:00 to 22:00, though hours differ at Christmas and New Year's. It serves its beer from oak casks, and the house is first documented in 1405. For a same-day table, call or use the online form. Afterwards cross to the Altes Rathaus, built on an artificial island in the Regnitz river and reached by the Obere Brücke, and look at Klein Venedig, the row of old fishermen's houses beside the water.

🚶 The old town is compact, Schlenkerla and the Altes Rathaus are a short walk apart 💵 Pay per glass and dish, prices on the menu (check current) 🕐 Lunch from 11:30 once the kitchen is running, allow 3 hours with the market
Evening
The wooden Henkersteg bridge and the Weinstadel on the Pegnitz river in Nuremberg

Back to Nuremberg & the U2 to the airport

Take an afternoon train back and plan the rest around your flight. If time allows, walk the Pegnitz by the Henkersteg wooden bridge and the Weinstadel, or have a last Rostbratwurst at the market (open until 21:00, and until 14:00 on 24 December). The U2 runs to the airport roughly every 10 minutes from about 4:30 to 00:30, and the N12 night bus serves it on Friday and Saturday nights and the nights before public holidays. If you have an early flight, check the first and last trains before you book the day trip.

🚇 U2 from Hauptbahnhof to the airport, ~13 min 💵 €3.90 single at the machine, €3.65 online (2026, check current) 🕐 Leave central Nuremberg at least 3 hrs before an international flight

💶 Tipping & Table Manners

  • Service is included in German menu prices, but rounding up or adding about 5-10% is normal in restaurants. Say the total you want to pay as you hand over the money instead of leaving coins on the table.
  • In a bratwurst kitchen or beer cellar you may be seated at a shared table. Ask "Ist hier noch frei?" before you sit down.
  • Greet staff in shops and cafés with "Grüß Gott" or "Guten Tag", and say "Tschüss" or "Auf Wiedersehen" when you leave.

🍷 Market Mugs, Cash & Hours

  • Glühwein and other hot drinks come in a deposit mug (Pfand). In 2025 the deposit was €5, set centrally for the market, and the mug design changes each year. Ask at the stall where to return it for the refund, or keep it as a souvenir.
  • The 2026 Christkindlesmarkt runs 27 November to 24 December, daily 10:00 to 21:00, with 24 December closing at 14:00. The Markt der Partnerstädte ends on 23 December.
  • Carry coins and small notes, since individual stalls may not take cards. The market also issues a €5 Christkindlesmarkt-Taler token (packs of ten sold for €45 in 2025, with a per-person limit), usable at the main market, the Sister Cities market and the Kinderweihnacht. Check current rules.

🚋 Tickets, Trams & Sunday Closures

  • Single tickets from a machine or the VGN app are valid for immediate use. Multi-trip tickets must be stamped at a validator before your first ride. Riding without a valid ticket brings a fine, generally €60 in Germany (check current).
  • Most shops are closed on Sundays and public holidays. The city lists no shopping Sundays in Advent 2026, though late shopping runs to 22:00 on the market's opening Friday, 27 November. The market, restaurants and cafés stay open.
  • On 24 and 25 December the Kaiserburg, the Dürer-Haus, the Toy Museum and the Documentation Center are closed, and the market closes at 14:00 on 24 December.

⚠️ History, Safety & Etiquette Warnings

  • The Documentation Center and the Rally Grounds deal with Nazi crimes. Keep your voice down, skip jokey photos, and never use Nazi gestures or symbols, which are illegal in Germany.
  • The city itself notes that the Nazis used the Christkindlesmarkt for propaganda from 1933, and the Frauenkirche stands on the site of a synagogue destroyed in 1349. Treat churches and memorials as places of remembrance.
  • Old-town cobbles and the climb to the Kaiserburg get slick in sleet and frost, so wear shoes with grip. Keep bags zipped and in front of you in the market crowds, especially on the opening evening.

🗣️ Crucial Phrases in German

  • Grüß Gott: hello
  • Danke: thank you
  • Drei im Weggla, bitte: three sausages in a roll, please
  • Einen Glühwein, bitte: a mulled wine, please

💳 Money & Payments

  • Germany uses the euro. Cards and phones work in most hotels, museums and larger restaurants, but smaller cafés, bakeries and stalls may be cash-only or take only a German Girocard. Ask "Kann ich mit Karte zahlen?" before you order.
  • Use bank-branded ATMs and avoid standalone machines in tourist areas. Ask your card issuer about foreign-transaction fees before you travel.
  • The $750-1,000 budget per person covers about three nights in a mid-range hotel (rates rise in market season), meals, local transport, entry fees and the Bamberg day trip, but not international flights.

🎟️

Check the Nürnberg Card against paying per sight

The digital Nürnberg Card lasts 48 hours and, in the 2025 tourism leaflet, gave free entry to the Kaiserburg, Albrecht-Dürer-Haus, Toy Museum, Documentation Center and Germanisches Nationalmuseum, plus free local transport in the urban area, for about €38 per adult. The four paid stops in this plan add up to €32.50 (Kaiserburg €10, the other three €7.50 each) before transport, so the card wins if you add the museum or a few rides. Start its 48 hours on Day 2 morning so it covers Days 2 and 3, and check the current price.

🏛️

Add the €4 city museums upgrade

If you skip the card, buy a ticket to one city museum and add €4 for a day ticket valid at the other Museen der Stadt Nürnberg that day. On Day 3, the Documentation Center plus the upgrade is €11.50 and covers the Toy Museum, instead of €15 for two separate tickets.

🍷

Get your mug deposit back

The 2025 deposit was €5 per mug, so across several evenings it adds up. Return each mug for the refund, or keep one as a souvenir and treat the deposit as its price.

📸 Off-the-Beaten-Path Secrets

⏰

Visit the stalls on a weekday late morning

The market opens at 10:00 daily. The city says locals favour weekday evenings and the morning of 24 December, so for room to walk and browse, try a weekday late morning or early afternoon and come back after dark for the lights.

🍪

Read the Lebkuchen label

Nürnberger Lebkuchen is origin-protected, so only gingerbread made in Nuremberg can carry the name, while "Nürnberger Art" means it was made elsewhere. Elisen-Lebkuchen, the top grade, must contain at least 25% nuts or almonds under German food guidelines. A Lebkuchen café also sits inside the Handwerkerhof, so you can compare before you buy a tin.

🌍

The Sister Cities market next door

The Markt der Partnerstädte on the Rathausplatz gives a break from the main stalls, with crafts and specialties from partner cities and countries such as Nicaragua, China, Scotland and Ukraine. It runs to 23 December, a day before the main market closes.

✈️ Flights

  • Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is about 5 km from the centre. The U2 reaches the Hauptbahnhof in about 13 minutes, roughly every 10 minutes from about 4:30 to 00:30, and the N12 night bus runs on Friday and Saturday nights and the nights before public holidays.
  • Ticket machines are just outside baggage claim and at the top of the underground stairs, and the VGN app sells tickets too. Some airline tickets include free local travel, so check the leaflet that comes with yours.
  • Many long-haul visitors connect through Frankfurt or Munich and finish by train. Check DB for the connection, since a Munich to Nuremberg ICE takes roughly an hour.

🚕 Taxis & Rideshare

  • Taxis wait at the airport. The tourist office quotes about €28 and 15 minutes to the centre in normal traffic, but the meter decides.
  • Uber started in the Nuremberg region in November 2024 (UberX, Uber Comfort and Uber Taxi), and Bolt has run a pilot, so check the apps for a Nuremberg address before you rely on them.
  • Taxis are rarely needed. The old town is walkable, and trams or the U-Bahn cover the Rally Grounds and the airport.

🚇 Public Transport & Tickets

  • The VAG runs the U-Bahn, trams and buses in Nuremberg as part of the VGN network, and rides in Nuremberg, Fürth and Stein need price level A. In 2026 a single ticket is €3.65 online or €3.90 at a machine or on the bus, and a short trip is €1.90.
  • TagesTicket Solo covers one person for a day, and TagesTicket Plus covers 1 to 6 people with at most two adults. Check the current price in the VGN app against your number of rides.
  • The Nürnberg Card includes free local transport for 48 hours. Single tickets bought at a machine or in the app are valid immediately, and multi-trip tickets must be stamped.

🏨 Hotels & Where to Stay

  • Around the Hauptmarkt: the most walkable base for the market, the Frauenkirche and the castle, and the most expensive in market season.
  • Near the Hauptbahnhof and Königstor: close to the U2 airport link, the Bamberg trains and the Handwerkerhof, about 15 minutes on foot from the Hauptmarkt.
  • Castle quarter near the Kaiserburg and Dürer-Haus: quieter at night, with cobbled slopes to climb.
  • Near Lorenzkirche (U1): central, and a short walk from the Toy Museum. Book early for market season.

📱 Connectivity & Cash

  • Germany is in the EU, so EU SIM holders roam at home rates. Other visitors can use an eSIM or a local prepaid SIM, and hotels and many cafés offer Wi-Fi.
  • Cards work in most hotels, museums and larger restaurants, but keep cash for market stalls, small cafés and tips.
  • Use bank-branded ATMs, and avoid standalone exchange booths.

🧳 Other Essentials

  • For Bamberg, DB lists the fastest ICE at about 34 minutes and regional trains at about 41 minutes. The Bayern-Ticket (from €34 for one person, regional trains only, valid from 9:00 on weekdays) can beat point-to-point fares, so compare in the DB Navigator app. The Deutschland-Ticket costs €63 a month in 2026, rising to €66.80 from 1 January 2027, but it is a subscription you must cancel.
  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a popular alternative, but it is reached with changes on regional lines, so this plan uses Bamberg for the simpler link.
  • Check your passport's Schengen rules before booking, including whether ETIAS applies on your travel dates. Car rental is not needed, since trains, trams and walking cover this itinerary.
