Palaces, Klimt, coffeehouse cake and hot punch under the Rathaus lights: four days in Vienna in Christmas market season, with a plan that works in other months too.
Vienna International Airport (VIE) sits southeast of the centre, and the usual rail links are changing. The main S-Bahn line is closed until October 2027, so the City Airport Train (CAT) is replaced by premium buses to Wien Mitte (about 21 minutes, from around €7). Railjet trains from the airport station reach Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes for roughly €5.50, and the S7 runs to Wien St. Marx, where you change to tram 18 or 71. Vienna Airport Lines buses (€11 one way) serve Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof, Schwedenplatz, Karlsplatz and Praterstern. Routes and fares have changed recently, so check the ÖBB and airport sites before you fly.

The cathedral is open for prayer from early morning, while the sightseeing visit has set hours (Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 16:30) and an €8 fee, so check current times, since services can limit access. The south tower climb is 343 steps, and the north tower has a lift to a platform near the Pummerin bell, each €8. From there walk along the Graben past the Plague Column and down the pedestrian Kärntner Straße toward the Opera. A Christmas village also stands on Stephansplatz in market season (listed for 6 November to 26 December in 2026).
🚶 Stephansplatz is on U1 and U3, the rest is pedestrian 💵 Free to walk, €8 cathedral visit, €8 per tower 🕐 Late afternoon, allow 2-3 hours with a tower climbThe Wiener Christkindlmarkt fills the square in front of the neo-Gothic City Hall (Rathaus). The 2026 dates are 13 November to 26 December, daily 10:00 to 22:00 (24 December until 18:30). Try Punsch (a spiced hot drink, often with rum or fruit juice) or Glühwein (mulled wine), roasted chestnuts (Maroni) and Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes). Drinks come in a deposit mug (Häferl): at Rathausplatz in 2024, punch ran from about €5 to €8.50 with a €5 deposit, so check the current boards. An ice-skating area, the Eistraum, sits beside the market (listed for 13 November to 6 January, so check dates, tickets and skate hire).
🚋 Tram 1, 2 or D along the Ring, or ~25 min on foot from Stephansplatz 💵 Free entry, ~€5-8.50 per punch plus a ~€5 mug deposit (2024 prices) 🕐 After dark for the lights, weekdays are quieter than weekend eveningsThe Hofburg was the Habsburg winter residence, and the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments cover the court life of Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. The redesigned Sisi Museum is due to reopen on 19 November 2026, with reduced prices and shorter hours until then, and the Silver Collection, once part of the same visit, is being redeveloped, so confirm what is open before you go. Book a timed ticket through the official shop, since the palace sites warn about fake resellers. If you would rather see the Lipizzaner horses, the Spanish Riding School's Morning Exercise is listed on Tuesday to Friday mornings (about an hour, standing places from around €17), so swap the order on those days.
🚶 ~10 min walk from Stephansplatz via the Graben and Kohlmarkt 💵 ~€15-20 Sisi Museum day ticket (reduced until 18 Nov, check current) 🕐 Arrive at opening, allow 2-3 hoursViennese coffeehouse culture is on Austria's UNESCO inventory of intangible cultural heritage (listed in 2011). Demel on Kohlmarkt is open daily 10:00 to 19:00, has made confectionery since 1786 and does not take reservations. Café Sacher, in Hotel Sacher beside the Opera, serves the Original Sacher-Torte. Café Central on Herrengasse closed in March 2026 for renovation, with a pop-up called Decentral on the Freyung standing in, so check whether it has reopened. Order a melange (espresso with steamed milk and foam) and take your time, because nobody expects you to leave when the cup is empty.
🚶 Kohlmarkt is ~5 min from the Hofburg, Café Sacher ~10 min 💵 ~€4-7 per melange, ~€7-11 per slice of cake (check current) 🕐 Mid-afternoon, off-peak hours are calmerSpittelberg is a quarter of Biedermeier houses and narrow lanes behind the MuseumsQuartier, and its market leans toward crafts as well as punch. The 2026 dates are 13 November to 23 December, Monday to Friday 14:00 to 21:30 and weekends and holidays from 11:00. If you prefer a larger setting, Am Hof (13 November to 23 December) and the Art Advent at Karlsplatz (13 November to 23 December) run on similar dates, and the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on the Freyung runs 14 November to 23 December. Mug deposits differ from market to market, so ask at the stall.
🚶 ~15-20 min walk from the Hofburg via the MuseumsQuartier 💵 Free entry, ~€5 per punch plus a mug deposit (check current) 🕐 Weekday stalls open from 2:00 PM, weekends are busierSchönbrunn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the Habsburg summer palace. It is open daily from 8:30 (check winter closing times), and tickets are timed and sold through the official shop. The State Apartments ticket (€30, about 40 minutes with audio guide) is the short visit, and the Palace Ticket (€42, about 75 minutes) is the longer one that older guides call the Grand Tour. The gardens are free to walk, but the Gloriette terrace is part of the paid Exclusive Gardens ticket in the summer season (27 March to 2 November 2026), so check whether the terrace is open in winter.
🚇 U4 to Schönbrunn, ~15 min from Karlsplatz 💵 €42 Palace Ticket or €30 State Apartments, gardens free (check current) 🕐 Arrive at the 8:30 opening, allow 3 hours with the gardensIn market season the palace's main courtyard (Ehrenhof) hosts a Christmas market with more than 90 stalls, ice skating and Eisstock (Austrian curling). Its 2026 season is listed as 6 November to 6 January, daily 10:00 to 21:00 with shorter hours on 24 and 25 December. Then ride the U4 back toward the centre to Kettenbrückengasse for the Naschmarkt, the long food market along the Wienzeile. Stalls are open Monday to Saturday (to 21:00 on weekdays and 18:00 on Saturday), while the restaurants and bars also open on Sundays. A flea market runs beside it on Saturdays.
🚇 U4 from Schönbrunn to Kettenbrückengasse, ~10 min 💵 Free to browse, pay per dish or stall 🕐 Early afternoon at the palace, then the market before it closesThe Vienna State Opera sells standing places (about 435 of them in the house, per its seating chart) at a separate standing-room box office. In recent seasons the prices ran from roughly €4 to €18 depending on the area and performance, and the house also runs a card scheme, Standing RoomPLUS, for advance booking. Check the calendar for the evening's performance and the Staatsoper's standing-room page for the current sale time and limits, since the box office has opened about 80 minutes before curtain. Dress smartly, as the house asks guests to dress elegantly. For a different evening, the Schönbrunn Palace Concerts run daily at 8:30 PM in the Orangery, and the Musikverein and Konzerthaus publish their own programmes.
🚶 Karlsplatz station (U1, U2, U4) is beside the Opera, ~15 min walk from the Naschmarkt 💵 Standing room roughly €4-18 (check current) 🕐 Queue well before curtain, latecomers may wait for a breakThe Upper Belvedere is a baroque palace and art museum, and it holds Gustav Klimt's The Kiss among its Klimt masterpieces. A timed ticket is required: the Upper Belvedere is €23 per adult and opens daily 9:00 to 18:00 (check current), and a 2-in-1 day ticket with the Lower Belvedere is €32. Book online and choose the first slot of the day, since the Klimt rooms get busy by late morning. Visits are not limited in length once you are in.
🚋 Tram D to Schloss Belvedere, or a ~20 min walk from Karlsplatz 💵 €23 Upper Belvedere, €32 with the Lower Belvedere 🕐 Book the 9:00 slot, allow 2 hoursKarlskirche is a baroque church with a green copper dome and two tall columns in front. Entry is €9.50 and includes the church model, the panoramic terrace, the treasury and the organ gallery (Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 18:00, Sunday and holidays 11:00 to 19:00), so check whether the terrace lift is running. Then ride the Ringstrasse by tram: trams 1 and 2 (and D and 71) run along the Ring past the State Opera, Hofburg, Parliament and City Hall. A normal ticket covers it, but each line only covers part of the Ring, so check your route in the WienMobil app.
🚶🚋 ~15 min walk from Belvedere, then a Ring tram near the Opera 💵 €9.50 Karlskirche, tram included in a normal ticket 🕐 Afternoon, allow 1 hour at the church and 30-40 min on the tramThe Wiener Riesenrad in the Prater rises nearly 65 m over the rooftops, and tickets can be booked online to skip the box-office queue. Adult tickets have been around €15, and evening hours change with the season, so check current prices and winter times. Praterstern, beside the wheel on U1, is also where the Vienna Airport Lines VAB 5 bus leaves directly for the airport (new in September 2026), and the CAT bus leaves from Wien Mitte. Skip the wheel if your flight is early.
🚇 U1 to Praterstern, then the VAB 5 airport bus 💵 ~€15 Riesenrad, €11 airport bus (check current) 🕐 Leave central Vienna at least 3 hrs before an international flightA single ticket costs about €3, a 24 Stunden WIEN ticket €9.70 and a 7 Tage WIEN ticket €25.20 (2026 fares, which rise each January). Four 24-hour tickets would cost €38.80, so a 7-day ticket is cheaper for this trip if you ride daily, and the old 48- and 72-hour tickets are no longer sold. The Vienna City Card adds sight discounts, but they are small (about €1.50 off the Upper Belvedere), so it only pays off if you use many.
Standing places are the cheapest way into the house, roughly €4 to €18 in recent seasons depending on the area. Check the Staatsoper's standing-room page for the sale time, and dress warmly in case you queue.
The deposit is often €4 to €5 per cup, so across several evenings it adds up. Return each mug at the market where you bought it, or keep one as a souvenir and treat the deposit as its price.
Spittelberg, Am Hof and the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on the Freyung all run from mid-November to 23 December and are smaller than Rathausplatz, with more craft stalls.
The Rathausplatz market opens at 10:00 daily, so a weekday late-morning visit avoids the evening crowds. Come back after dark on another day for the lights.
If Day 3 falls on a Saturday, swap the order: go to the Naschmarkt flea market first (it runs roughly 6:30 AM to 2:00-3:00 PM, check current) and Schönbrunn afterwards. On a Sunday the Naschmarkt stalls are closed, though its restaurants stay open.
